Headspace is worth it for beginners. Its structured courses teach meditation better than any other app, and on the annual plan it costs $5.83 a month. For students it is close to free at $9.99 a year. If you already meditate, want sleep content above everything, or would rather not pay, there are better fits.
Headspace has a 4.8-star rating from over a million App Store reviews and a reputation as the friendliest way into meditation. Here is whether the subscription is actually worth your money.
What Headspace costs in 2026
Headspace’s pricing has stayed stable for years, which makes it easy to plan around. Both the monthly and annual plans unlock exactly the same library. The only differences are the price and the trial length.
Take the annual trial if you are serious. The annual plan comes with a 14-day free trial, twice as long as the monthly plan’s 7 days. Two weeks is enough time to see whether a daily habit actually forms.
What you get
Structured courses that start with the basics and build progressively, which is Headspace’s defining strength.
A large library of guided meditations on stress, anxiety, focus, sleep, and relationships.
Sleepcasts, sleep sounds, and focus music.
Movement and mindful exercise sessions.
Daily content to start your morning.
Headspace has also expanded into mental health coaching and therapy within the app. Those are separate services from the core meditation subscription, so check the details in-app if they interest you.
Free access outside the trial is limited, so the trial is the real way to evaluate Headspace. For a fuller look at the app, see our Headspace review.
Who Headspace is worth it for
Complete beginners. This is the clearest case. If you have never meditated, or tried and felt lost, Headspace’s step-by-step courses remove the confusion. It teaches you what to do rather than handing you a library to browse.
Students. At $9.99 a year, roughly 85% off, Headspace is one of the best-value wellness subscriptions available anywhere. If you qualify, it is an easy yes.
Families. $99.99 a year covers up to six people, about $16.67 per person per year.
People who like structure. If you prefer following a program to picking sessions at random, Headspace suits you.
Who should skip it
Experienced meditators. Once you are past the beginner courses, the library can start to feel familiar. Insight Timer offers far more variety for free.
People who mainly want help sleeping. Headspace’s sleep content is good, but Calm’s Sleep Stories are deeper and better produced.
People who will not pay. Insight Timer is free with no time limit.
Occasional users. If you will open it a few times a month, the per-session cost gets high, and a free app is the better call.
The student plan, in detail
Headspace’s student plan is one of its best features, so here is exactly how it works.
You need to be 18 or older and enrolled in a post-secondary program in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Portugal, or Spain. Verification is handled through SheerID using an enrollment letter, class schedule, tuition receipt, or similar document. The price is $9.99 USD or $12.99 CAD per year.
You re-verify annually. When you graduate, Headspace automatically moves you to a one-year alumni rate at 40% off the regular annual price, then to the standard annual plan after that. Set a reminder so the jump does not surprise you.
The honest math
On the annual plan, Headspace costs $5.83 a month. On the monthly plan, $12.99 a month adds up to about $156 a year, more than double the annual cost.
Use it five mornings a week on the annual plan and each session costs about 27 cents. Use it twice a month and you are paying nearly $3 per session.
How to pay less
Use the student plan if you qualify. Nothing else comes close.
Use the family plan if several people will use it.
Watch for the 40% first-year offer. It appears regularly for new subscribers. Note that the plan renews at full price in year two.
Check your employer and health plan. Some offer Headspace as a free benefit.
Choose annual once you are sure. It saves more than half compared with monthly.
Headspace vs the alternatives
Calm: better for sleep, less structured for beginners, similar annual price.
Insight Timer: free, enormous library, overwhelming for beginners.

Common questions
Is Headspace free? Free access outside the trial is limited. The free trial, 7 days on monthly or 14 days on annual, gives you full access.
Does the free trial auto-renew? Yes. Cancel before it ends if you decide not to continue.
Is Headspace better than Calm? For learning meditation, yes. For sleep, Calm is stronger.
Can Canadian students get the student plan? Yes, at $12.99 CAD per year.
What happens to the student price when I graduate? You move to a one-year alumni rate at 40% off, then to the regular annual price.
The bottom line
Headspace is worth it if you are new to meditation and want to be taught properly, and it is an outstanding deal for students and families. It is less worth it for experienced meditators, sleep-first users, or anyone who will only open it occasionally.
Start the 14-day annual trial, use it daily, and decide based on whether the habit sticks.
