Talkspace Alternatives: Where to Look in 2026

Talkspace works well for many people, but it is not the right fit for everyone. Here are the seven strongest alternatives, organized by the specific reason you might be looking elsewhere.

The quick verdict

The right Talkspace alternative depends on why you are looking elsewhere. For a larger therapist network: BetterHelp. For Medicaid in select states and broad coverage: Rula. For full-length sessions with a private-practice therapist: Headway. For couples: Regain. For depression and anxiety: Brightside.

Talkspace is a strong platform, with broad insurance coverage and integrated psychiatry. But it isn’t right for everyone. If it isn’t working for you, or you want to compare before signing up, here are seven alternatives worth considering.

When to consider a Talkspace alternative

Messaging replies feel slow. Talkspace’s messaging model can mean waiting longer than you’d like for responses.

You want a larger network. Talkspace’s network is large, but BetterHelp’s is larger.

Your insurance isn’t accepted, or you have Medicaid. Talkspace accepts most major plans and Medicare, but not Medicaid.

You want longer sessions. Talkspace’s live sessions are typically 30 minutes. Some people want the traditional 60.

You need couples therapy with a dedicated focus. Talkspace offers couples therapy, but couples-first platforms exist.

How the alternatives compare

App Best for Price (annual) Rating Platforms
BetterHelp Largest network, out-of-pocket $70-$100/wk 8.5 iOS, Android, Web
Rula Medicare, Medicaid in select states ~$15 avg copay or $150/session 8.4 iOS, Android, Web
Headway 60-minute sessions for a copay Copay, typically $20-$50 8.2 Web + in-person
SonderMind Insurance-first, self-pay option ~$25 avg copay or self-pay 8.0 iOS, Android, Web
Grow Therapy Specialty matching Copay, or self-pay 7.9 Web + in-person
Brightside Depression/anxiety focus $95-$349/mo 7.8 iOS, Android, Web
Regain Couples therapy $70-$100/wk 8.2 iOS, Android, Web

1. BetterHelp: the largest network

BetterHelp is Talkspace’s closest competitor. It has the largest therapist network in online therapy, fast matching, and easy switching, and its plans include a weekly live session alongside messaging.

It costs $70 to $100 a week, and it offers financial aid to some eligible users who are not using insurance. It has begun accepting some insurance, with an average copay around $23 where covered.

Choose it over Talkspace if you are paying out of pocket, want the largest network, or found Talkspace’s replies slow. Skip it if your insurance covers Talkspace but not BetterHelp, or you want psychiatry on the same platform as your therapy. BetterHelp offers psychiatry only as an add-on through UpLift, which does not prescribe controlled substances.

For the head-to-head, see BetterHelp vs Talkspace.

2. Rula: broad coverage, including Medicaid in select states

Rula is in-network with more than 100 commercial plans, accepts Medicare in all 50 states, and accepts Medicaid in select states, which Talkspace doesn’t accept at all. It uses traditional 60-minute scheduled sessions and offers psychiatry. Average copay is around $15.

Choose it over Talkspace if you have Medicaid in a state Rula covers, your plan isn’t accepted by Talkspace, or you want full-length sessions. Skip it if you want messaging between sessions, or you are paying out of pocket, since sessions cost $150 without insurance.

3. SonderMind: insurance-first, with self-pay

SonderMind connects you with licensed therapists and psychiatric providers, virtually or in person, in all 50 states. It accepts most major plans, including Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and TRICARE West (not TRICARE East), with an average copay around $25. It also offers self-pay rates shown before you book, and no subscription.

Choose it over Talkspace if you want a traditional session-based relationship and upfront pricing. Skip it if you have Medicaid, which SonderMind doesn’t accept, or you want messaging between sessions.

4. Grow Therapy: for specialty-specific needs

Grow Therapy accepts more than 125 insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid in select states. It is especially strong at matching people with specialists: LGBTQ+ affirming care, culturally responsive care, trauma-informed therapy, and specific approaches like DBT or EMDR.

Choose it over Talkspace if you have specific specialty needs Talkspace hasn’t met. Skip it if you want the simplest general-purpose option.

5. Brightside: for depression and anxiety

Brightside specializes in depression, anxiety, and related conditions, with both therapy and psychiatry. Its psychiatry plan costs $95 a month out of pocket, far less than Talkspace’s out-of-pocket psychiatry at $299 for an evaluation and $175 per follow-up. Therapy is $299 a month, or $349 with psychiatry.

Choose it over Talkspace if you’re treating anxiety or depression specifically, or want affordable medication management. Skip it if your concerns are broader.

6. Regain: for couples therapy

If you are considering Talkspace for couples therapy, Regain is worth a look. It is owned by BetterHelp’s parent company and focuses entirely on relationships, with a shared account for both partners and three-way calling for partners in different places.

Pricing: $70 to $100 a week for both partners, billed every four weeks, so expect 13 charges a year rather than 12. Regain doesn’t accept insurance, but financial aid may be available; check during signup. Sessions typically run 30 to 45 minutes.

Choose it over Talkspace if couples therapy is your focus. Skip it if you need insurance to cover it. See our online therapy for couples guide.

7. Headway: full sessions for your copay

Headway is a directory of independent, often very experienced therapists who accept insurance. You pay your copay, typically $20 to $50, with no subscription, and most sessions run a full 60 minutes. Some of its psychiatric providers can prescribe controlled medications where state law allows.

Alma works similarly, with free 15-minute consultations from most of its therapists and sliding-scale options for out-of-network clients, though billing is a recurring theme in its Better Business Bureau complaints, such as copays that changed after the fact.

Choose it over Talkspace if you want longer sessions with an established therapist. Skip Headway if you need out-of-network care or messaging.

What about 7 Cups?

You may see 7 Cups suggested as a cheap alternative. We don’t recommend it. Its free chat uses volunteer “listeners,” not therapists, and independent reviews updated in 2026 raised serious concerns. ConsumersAdvocate reported that a tester finished the listener training and began chatting with users within 20 minutes, and that another tester was matched with a listener who made sexually suggestive comments. ChoosingTherapy no longer recommends it after 7 Cups connected its team with therapists who were not licensed in their state.

Which alternative fits your reason?

“Messaging replies are too slow”: BetterHelp, which adds a weekly live session, or Rula or Headway for scheduled hour-long sessions.

“My insurance isn’t covered”: Rula first, then Headway or SonderMind.

“I have Medicaid”: Rula or Grow Therapy (in select states), or a community mental health center.

“I want longer sessions”: Rula or Headway, both typically 60 minutes.

“I need couples therapy”: Regain.

“Cost is a hard barrier”: community mental health centers, Open Path Collective ($40 to $70 a session), or BetterHelp’s financial aid. See our cheapest online therapy guide.

“I have specific specialty needs”: Grow Therapy or Brightside.

When to stay with Talkspace

Stay with Talkspace if your insurance covers it (Talkspace says most insured members have a $0 copay, which is hard to beat), you want therapy and psychiatry in one app, or you value messaging between sessions.

For more, see our Talkspace review and Talkspace pricing guide.

When online therapy is not enough

None of these platforms, or Talkspace, is appropriate for active suicidality or thoughts of self-harm, acute psychotic symptoms, severe substance use crisis, severe eating disorders requiring intensive treatment, or complex trauma requiring specialized care. For these, please seek local crisis services or your primary care physician, or in the US, call or text 988.

The bottom line

For most people looking beyond Talkspace, BetterHelp is the strongest choice if you’re paying out of pocket or want a larger network. Rula is best if insurance is the issue, including Medicaid in select states. Headway gives you full-length sessions for your copay, Regain is built for couples, and community mental health centers are the honest answer when cost is a hard barrier.
